'Aliki Vougiouklaki is the most famous film star you've never heard of. She was a huge star in Greece, in Cyprus, in Turkey, where she functioned as a sort of mix, if you can imagine this, of all the great stars of all the other countries put together - Monroe, Bardot, Sophia Loren, Giulietta Masina, Grace Kelly, both Hepburns, Audrey and Katherine, Shirley MacLaine, Elizabeth Taylor - she really did cross that extraordinary spectrum.'

So Ali Smith introduced Aliki Vougiouklaki at our LRB Screen event back in April. Listen below to the post-screening discussion of The Slapping Came From Heaven, Vougiouklaki's breakthrough 1959 comedy exploring class and gender in post-war Greece through the teacher-pupil power struggles in an elite all-girls' school.

The conversation ends with a short discussion of Mädchen in Uniform, in which Ali calls on the BFI to put out a deluxe DVD of the film. So far as we know, they've yet to heed the call, so instead, we're screening it as the second installment of what's fast becoming an Ali-Smith-Presents-Obscure-Foreign-Films-Set-In-Girls'-Schools series. Book your tickets now.
